2005 Haiti Team News

The team members were Charlie Belcher, Jack Dodd, Bill Honeycutt, Lincoln Jacobs, Charles Jennings, Jon Kolb, Tom Kolb and David Varnell. The team had two objects consisting of (1) building a covered waiting area for the family planning center and (2) putting together school desks and kindergarten tables with benches.

Charles Jennings, Lincoln Jacobs, Jon Kolb, Tom Kolb and David Varnell were to build the roof of the waiting area and build a partition wall in the examination room. The first task was to unload the container where the metal roofing material and wood was stored. The entire team assisted in this task. The waiting area was near the front entrance of the hospital and a staging area was established just inside the automobile gate, near the guesthouse. The construction material had to be moved to this area to permit the use of electric saws. The primary task at hand was the construction of the roof over the waiting area inside the fence and adjacent to the old kitchen which was to be converted in to two examining rooms that would compose the family planning clinic. The roofing supports columns were laid out and then the main support beam constructed. Following completion of the erection on the support beam, the headers were attached to the walls and the rafters installed. The nailers were installed followed by the metal roofing. As the roofing was being secured with screws, the interior walls were cut and erected in place.

Charlie Belcher, Bill Honeycutt and Jack Dodd were assigned to putting together the school desks/kindergarten tables. The material had been precut and shipped in an earlier container. It had been removed from the container and stored in the pavilion where the work was to be done. Along with Marcel we began on Monday morning with Bill preparing the leg assemblies and Charlie, Marcel and Jack began assembling the desks.

It took several desks before we established a routine and progress began to show. Over the next three days we completed 65 school desks. Along the way Father Deravel brought one of the kindergarten teachers to the pavilion and she asked that we assemble four of the units with two tables attached together lengthwise. Charlie developed an assembly method that would assure strength and stability. We completed four of these “double length” units and six individual tables. We also assembled 28 benches to go with the tables. We estimated that we used approximately 10,000 screws.
We had the opportunity to have interplay with the school children since our worksite was very near the school. They would gather around and watch us, often wanted to be allowed to drive a screw. They seemed to enjoy themselves and we certainly enjoyed them.

On Wednesday afternoon we were invited to visit with Rodney & Sharon Babe to learn of their progress in fish propagation and reforestation. It was extremely interesting to hear of the new and innovating projects they are doing.

This was a very good group of men to have on the team. There was a willingness to do anything asked, a great sense of camaraderie, plenty of good-natured kidding and always an awareness that God was watching over us.
