Presbyterian 101
SOMETHING NEW! We have been studying about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Humanity, and other topics, using the book Presbyterian Questions and Answers, available through PCUSA. The book is divided into 13 chapters, with 7 questions and answers to ponder each week. Our group is made up of some visitors as well as new members and we will conclude this study in mid-April. We hope to offer this class to other visitors and new members later this year.
Co-teachers will be Jan Varnell (875-2387) and Kathy Taber (847-9858). This new class will meet 9:45-10:40 in the session room.
Seekers Class
The Seekers Class began in 1996 as a Young Adults Sunday School Class but was quickly expanded to include members of all ages as our curriculum began to focus on a variety of topics. Our desire has been to study topics in which class members have an interest and which further develop our relationship with Jesus Christ. Recent topics have included prayer, what it means to experience God, the meaning and cost of discipleship, and how to be a “Contagious Christian”.

Children's Sunday School
There are Sunday school opportunities for children of all ages. Class begins with a gathering in the "Sing and Share" room of all children before they go to their individual classrooms. This is a nurturing learning environment where the love of God can be experienced!

We are going to be looking for all boys and girls on Sunday’s at 9:45 am in the “Sing and Share” room. We will sing and learn special things about the Church. We hope everyone will make a special effort to be here, for we miss you when you don’t come! We will try to find God’s purpose for our lives as we learn about his character and have to trust in him.

Church Family Class
This class is designed for family couples between the ages of 20 to 49ish to come and learn how to be in a more loving relationship with each other and with Christ.

Make plans to join us as we read God’s word together and explore its meaning for our lives. We meet every week at 9:45 in the Chapel. PLEASE COME!

Discussion Class
The Discussion Class was started in the mid-1960’s, by a group of Rivermonters who were interested in sharing the passion of their faith. Their goal was to share their thoughts, to gain insights from others on how they live their faith in today’s environment, and to create opportunities to ask questions and to express opinions about the world in which we live. The discussion leaders are usually members of the class, however experts in various fields around the region are also scheduled from time-to-time. They meet in the first Commons area which is directly across from the kitchen.
Kerygma Class
Kerygma Class members have been studying the Bible together since 1987. The class members study outside of class and meet on Sunday mornings to discuss the material read. Facilitation of the discussions is rotated between several class members. The discussion format enables us to ask questions, share faith and experiences, and express opinions and doubts in a respectful atmosphere. Please join us on Sunday mornings to learn more about the Reformed faith.
Youth – Junior and Senior High
The Rivermont Youth Sunday School program is an extension of the overall Youth Group program. While youth ranging from middle school through high school occasionally meet together for announcements, meals, and a few outings, they are almost always divided by age when it comes to Sunday School. Middle School (grades 6th-8th) youth have their own maturity levels, needs, and desires, which are most often distinctly different than those of High School age (grades 9th-12th). Each Sunday morning beginning at 9:45 a.m., both Middle and High School youth meet in the church youth room for fellowship and announcements. After announcements, generally at 10:00 a.m., both groups separate into their own age groups for Sunday School. Each group is led by an adult member of the congregation who is carefully selected based upon their unique experiences and how that experience can be used to further the spiritual growth and maturity of our youth. Classes generally run from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Curriculum for the Youth Sunday Schools covers a seven year rotation to ensure that youth coming through the program are introduced to all of the basics associated with Christian Bible Study without undue repetition during their seven year involvement with the youth group. Topics for Youth Sunday School programs are biblically based and referenced. Topics include bible history and interpretation; the basics of the Presbyterian belief and comparison to other denominations; Christ's miracles and his numerous examples for how we should live our lives; study of various books of the Bible for basic overall bible understanding and knowledge; study of the prophets as to their importance to the old testament and even to life today; personal relationships with friends, family, and individual relationships with Christ; interpersonal skills needed for maturing yourh to reach adulthood; current issues and events; and other topics that help our youth understand their importance in this world.

Come join the Rivermont Youth for Sunday School as they expand their hearts, minds and souls in determining what God has planned for their lives.
Note: There is information about the Sunday night youth groups elsewhere on the website.

Basic Bible Class

Adults primarily in their 30’s to early 50’s gather in Commons #2 for this Group Bible Study. Dedicated to reading through the Bible, Basic Bible is designed as a forum where people not that familiar with the Bible could have a safe place to ask any questions and address any life challenge. The group opens in prayer and studies a chapter or two of a book in the Bible by taking turns reading around the circle. Then the group openly discusses the chapter, explores the context , combines insights and tries to find and relate God’s word for ourselves and our own situations. The Rev. Lina Robinson Hart facilitates the discussions.

Discipleship Class
The Discipleship Class was established in 1958 as one of the first Adult Sunday School Classes at the church. Our focus is to study the Scriptures in an effort to learn more about Christ and our mission in the world, hence our name “Discipleship”. The facilitator of the class rotates among several of our very competent members and past studies have included works by Philip Yancey, “What’s So Amazing About Grace”, Becky Pippert, “Out of the Salt Shaker”, and R.C. Sproul.

THE LIBRARY OF RIVERMONT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Located where two busy corridors in the Sunday School wing intersect, the church library is always open - and for checking out materials is operated on the honor system.

Several volunteers work regularly to keep the shelves organized, catalog new books, and generally maintain a relevant collection of materials. As space does not permit competition with the vast resources of a public library, the emphasis is on up-to-date children’s books, devotional and study helps, books about personal crises and of course some good current fiction and biography. In the “beach-read” section people may swap fairly current non-accessioned paperbacks designed for simple enjoyment or escape. The videos and dvd’s are wildly popular with the young people – as well as their parents.

During the past twelve years, the church library has changed dramatically. Almost all of the available wall space is now covered with shelves. Outdated and non-circulating materials have been discarded. The colorful jackets of new books are carefully covered with clear plastic to add vibrancy to the appearance of the shelves. Frequent articles in the church newsletter and bulletin call attention to new books and whatever else may be going on the in the library, which has resources suitable for the entire congregation.

    The library’s faithful volunteers are:

  • Anne Austin
  • Phyllis Belcher
  • Carolyn Boles
  • Courtney Bucher
  • Jane Kaplan
  • Jane Lupton
  • Debbie Smith
  • Frances Sontag
  • Dana Stubsten
