Rivermont Presbyterian Women

Purpose

Forgiven, freed by God through faith in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves:

  • To create a body of supportive women within our congregation
  • To nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study
  • To serve our members, our congregation, and our community
  • To support the worldwide mission of the church.

All women members of Rivermont Presbyterian Church and all women listed as "friends of the church" are considered members of this organization.

The Rivermont Presbyterian Women are divided into four day Circles, which meet on the second Monday of each month from September through June at 10:00 A.M. All meetings are held at the church except December and June’s meetings, which are held in different homes.  The Circles have a Bible Study and then all of the women gather for a delicious lunch.   For the women who work, there is an evening Circle, which meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 P.M. at the church. This year (2004-2005) the circles are studying Old Songs for New Millennium, a study of Psalms

  • A nursery is provided at the church for all meetings.

It is fascinating to attend a meeting of the Board of Rivermont Presbyterian Women. Each meeting is opened with prayer and a brief devotional. Reports from officers, committee chairs and circle chairs are shared. As each woman speaks, you begin to feel the link that forms the chain which holds this vital organization together. In September each year a list of current college students with their addresses is compiled. The list is divided by the number of circles (currently 5). The list included 25 students so each circle has 5 students. Each month the circle sends a card to each student with signatures and/or a message of encouragement in an effort to maintain a tangible connection with our church. In February, the L and R sends a Valentine to each student with a small monetary gift. After the first of the year new material is reviewed by a committee to determine the study for the coming years. Also, in the spring, a committee begins to work on recruiting new board members for our continuing work in 2005-2006. Contact can be maintained with Presbytery through the Resource center in Knoxville.

Mission and Outreach of PW:

Newton Child Development Center – This organization provides high-quality child care services in the low-income Westside community of Chattanooga.

UTC Presbyterian House – A mission ministry to encourage, love, and disciple student believers and introduce unbelievers to Jesus Christ through food, fellowship, prayer and Bible study.

Northside Neighborhood House – A community center that provides adult and children’s classes, a thrift store, and is a source for help to individuals and families in the local area in crisis situations. Northside also provides support services for quality daily living for individuals in low-income housing.

Mission Haven – Located in Decatur, GA and a part of the Columbia Theological Seminary, this organization distributes donated clothing to missionaries on furlough in or returning to the U.S.

Sunset Gap Community Center – This center helps individuals, families and the community at large through classes, visitations, and a thrift store in the Cosby, TN area. It is also funded by the PCUSA churches.

The Women’s Prayer Time meets at 10:00 a.m. in the Robinson Room on any Monday when there is not another women’s meeting, unless the church is closed. After a short devotional thought, we begin to pray, remembering special prayer concerns given on the yellow prayer sheets or on the prayer chain. We also pray through the church directory, half a page at a time, for the college students, the school teachers in our congregation, the church staff and officers and the upcoming events of our church life. We often remember our mission work and the needs of our country. Anyone is welcome to join us. An hour spent praying on Monday morning is a profitable way to begin the week. Try it, and you will see for yourself.

Women’s Mission Interpretation

Responsibility is to inform our women “how to help” and “who to help” for meaningful mission efforts in Chattanooga, in East TN and beyond.

RIVERMONT WOMEN’S MISSION INTERPRETATION

NOT JUST ANOTHER COMMITTEE?

Mission Interpretation does what the name implies. The responsibility is to inform our women “how to help” and “who to help” for meaningful mission efforts in Chattanooga, in East Tennessee Presbytery, in the U.S. and overseas.
Two major offerings-the fall Thank Offering and the spring
Birthday Offering support missions at home, in the states and abroad. The needs are researched by our General Assembly Presbyterian Women. Over the years many have given to needs and groups familiar to us.

Each year for our overseas missions called White Cross we choose what to give to provide clothing and needed supplies. In 2005 baby clothes and blankets were chosen. Closer to home we join other Presbyterian women and give to the Columbia Friendship Circle which provides partial student scholarships at Columbia Seminary. PC(U.S.A.) women missionaries receive cards during the year and gifts during holidays. When missionaries come to the Atlanta, Mission Haven campus on furlough, we provide like new, in style clothes. There is an ‘uptown’ stylish thrift store for missionaries and students there. You will be hearing more about that this month!
Funds from cookbook surpluses have been set aside for special mission efforts our women choose.

Part of those funds have been used at Sunset Gap and Morgan Scott Projects. Winter over-the-counter medicines for children, a special baby shower and a ice machine for Sunset Gap mission workers have received part of the money. Money for Christmas and kid’s medicines went to Morgan Scott.

We thank you for your generous outreach! Mission Interpretation always welcomes your input. Contact us anytime!
