Community Kitchen Vision and Needs

Future Hopes and Plans

The Chattanooga
Community Kitchen

Rivermont has had an emphasis on stateside
missions for the last two years. One of these missions is “The Chattanooga
Community Kitchen” which has grown since its inception involving four local
downtown churches and has expanded to a whole city block on east Eleventh
Street. Rivermont has been active at the CK for many years and will continue to
do so, in the planning and execution of a new phase.

Some of the past projects that we have been involved in are:

  1. Securing the necessary finances to lay
the tile that been sitting around for two years (laid by men of RPC).

  2. Painting various areas of the building.

  3. Help clean up the flooded basement and
renovate the damaged basement. Assembled 87 storage racks for canned foods
and spray painted the basement, thanks to use of a member spray paint unit.

  4. Furnished an apartment in the Family
    Housing and Learning Center.

  5. A member donated a used forklift.

  6. A member donated a free electrical
    analysis by the EPB.

  7. A member donated her company’s unused
    computers.

  8. Help prepare and serve lunch every fourth
    Friday of the month.

  9. Members charge CK cost to purchase
    materials for projects.

  10. Assist in fund raising.

  11. Volunteer on the front desk.

  12. Give generously of money, time and time
    when requested.

CK is very appreciative of ministry Rivermont
has done for the homeless population of the Chattanooga area.

Some of the everyday needs are: volunteers
for the night shelters, sponsors for The Family Housing and Learning Center and
Volunteers on the front desk. Also, individuals and groups to organize
fund-raising activities to benefit CK, clothing, shoes, toiletry items and coats
in the winter.

The question today is: Where is The CK going
in the future?

  • Homeless go after day surgery to recover.

  • They sleep if they work the third or
    fourth shift.

  • They relax after work.

THE RESPONSE FROM THE COMMUNITY KITCHEN

  • Proposed respite
    rooms-
Ten rooms for men and women who are released from the hospital
to recuperate at home, women who are experiencing at-risk pregnancies or
those recovering from an injury. The physicians at the HHCC would carefully
screen these patients. The staff at the HHCC will provide support to the
patients and the CNA’s who are contracted to oversee the patients.

  • Proposed 24-hour
    shelter
-A10 room facility for those who are gainfully employed on the
second or third shift and rooms will have a bed and dresser. Most night will
not take anyone after 6:00 PM. Those who receive offers to work 2nd or 3rd
shift must chose between shelter and work.

  • Proposed Day Care
Level 2-A comfortable place for 10-15 clients who participate in the program
“to call home” during the day. There will be a TV, books, computers, lockers
and W&D, case management services, and special programs. The goal of this
program will be permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

  • Proposed Day Care
    Center
Level 1-A safe and secure place to sit off the street and out
of the weather. Sitters may use the facilities, receive their mail and make
    phone calls.

All this will require raising
funds to complete this phase. Your monetary donation and prayers would be
appreciated. Anyone desiring more information or desiring a tour of the
facilities, please contact Paul Phillips at 843-0674.
